“Don’t leave us again, Ellie. Please-” Ellie and Westly had returned home and gone through a mess of explaining things. Elliot had dried his tears after they had all shared a bit of crying, though Claire’s eyes were still damp. “I’ll find a cure, I promise, and then maybe I can heal myself, too. But, Father, I just don’t know about myself. Maybe I need to stay this way to protect the town. I saw what damage happened when I left! They burned the place…but it’s my fault! I have to fix what I’ve done-” “Ellie, don’t say things like that! You couldn’t help any of this! We have failed as parents-” her mother snapped in the huddle. They continued to speak but eventually realized it was best that the children had their rest. Westly was more used to changing forms now, but still was not the greatest. His mother was keeping an eye on him. “Let’s just…get things back to normal. Your winter session of school starts in a week and a few days. Westly, I want you to-” “No, no! I don’t need blankets!” “Mother, that will only make him sick. He…doesn’t need to be warm like this…” Ellie stopped Claire from trying to bundle him up where he was lying on the couch. “But, the Winter is coming early!” “I’m sure he’s having a hard enough time ignoring the fire…” “I’ll be all right, but I don’t need…any more heat.” He mumbled. His sister had already gone to sleep in a nearby chair.
“They must be starving…” Claire looked into Elliot’s eyes. “Hmph- but, what do we do for him? We can’t make him hot soup now.” Mr. Ward’s smile was crooked. “We can…make him a separate serving for dinner…”
